From Static Structures to Adaptive Frameworks: AI Ethics and the Future of Taxonomies, Ontologies, and Knowledge Graphs
Roundtable Discussion led by Marisa Hughes, American Psychological Association; Heather Kotula, Access Innovations, Inc.
Sunday, June 7, 2026 at 11:00am
AI systems increasingly depend on taxonomies, ontologies, and knowledge graphs—but these structures are no longer neutral. They shape decisions, influence outcomes, and can amplify bias or misinformation. This interactive roundtable dives into the ethical challenges of building and maintaining these frameworks in an era of rapid AI evolution. We’ll explore how privacy, fairness, transparency, and accountability can guide adaptive models that respond to cultural shifts and real-time errors. Expect practical strategies for governance, bias mitigation, and embedding ethical safeguards into workflows. Join us to discover how resilient, ethically aligned taxonomies and ontologies can power trustworthy AI and sustainable information ecosystems.

International Standards for KOS supporting information retrieval and machine learning assessment
Panel led by Marjorie Hlava, Access Innovations; Joseph Busch, Taxonomy Strategies; Heather Hedden, Hedden Information Management; Marcia L. Zeng; Kent State University
Support for search and tagging using controlled vocabularies has been the main focus of the ISO 25964 standard, Thesauri and Interoperability with other Vocabularies, but this support has recently been complicated by the rise of ChatGPT and Generative AI. This panel will introduce ISO 25964 Part 1: Thesauri for Information Retrieval, creation, management, and use, which just completed its two years revision and released recently. It will also report the on-going revision of Part 2: Interoperability with other vocabularies which covers interoperability between different thesauri and with other types of knowledge organization systems (KOS). Additionally, the panel will emphasis several recent significant standardization efforts that address responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems by ISO and other organizations.
