'Andrea Ch?nier' Sung as Benefit at Metropolitan

The French revolution with Italian dressing was brought to the Metropolitan stage last night in the season's first performance of Giordano's "Andrea Ch?nier" in a well attended benefit performance for the Italian Benevolent Institute and Hospital. Rosa Ponselle took the part, formerly Claudia Muzio's, of the self-sacrificing heroine, and found it well suited to her voice. The very effective faint at the end of the third act as a prelude to prolonged curtain calls.

As before, Mr. Gigli was the poet of the title, a grateful part for him, with several long arias and declamatory passages, poetry and heroic defiance - and there was no doubt of Mr. Gigli's ability to declaim in melody and excite his hearers in doing so. Mr. Danise was a satisfactory Gerard, in good voice and more dramatic than he has been at some other times this season. Mr. Didur was Mathieu, among others in a long cast, with Mr. Moranzoni conducting.
