ACCESS INNOVATIONS (DATA HARMONY) PROVIDES NOTATION WHITE PAPER

Albuquerque, NM (October 12, 2007) - Access Innovations, Inc. (Access), a leader in the data management industry, has published a white paper on notation and its use in thesaurus and taxonomy creation.

Notation is in widespread use within information science and thesauri. Organizations such as the National Transportation Library, for example, use notation extensively. While notation allows freedom from strict alphabetical structure, a thesaurus can be both annotated and alphabetized to exploit the strengths of both systems. The Notation Module is designed to allow instant toggling between the annotated form and a traditional hierarchical view. The notations also may be alphabetical.

"Notation represents a new way of structuring material in a thesaurus," said Marjorie Hlava, Access president. "Notations are appended onto thesaurus terms, which then form the basis for the ordering of those terms within the thesaurus. Thus, in addition to traditional thesaurus structure the hierarchy may reflect other than an alphabetical structure. Notation allows the presentation of subject terms in an order determined by the creator rather than the default alphabetic display. Notation allows users to order terms as they wish - process order, chronological order, outline order or sequence order - in addition to conventional order."

"Notations provide flexibility in thesaurus construction by allowing the thesaurus to reflect priorities within the process, system and organization structures," added Alice Redmond Neal, lexicographer. "Other features allow the user to filter levels of information or data against which the thesaurus is applied while also arranging terms within the thesaurus to reflect frequency of term appearances within databases or other material."

Additional information on notation may be found in the White Paper available at www.accessinn.com.
