Taxaurus Overview – A Lighthearted Introduction to Taxonomy and Thesaurus Concepts
To open the first day of training, Alice will present a lighthearted review of taxonomy concepts. This introduction will lay the groundwork for later sessions, establish basic terminology, and ensure we all understand our shared controlled vocabulary describing taxonomies and thesauri.

The Nuts and Bolts of Thesaurus Development and Maintenance
Jack will explain how to develop a taxonomy from scratch and how to modify an existing vocabulary. Join us as we demonstrate how to structure a controlled vocabulary based on a hierarchical sorting of terms while detailing the differences between each taxonomic classification. The session will cover top-down and bottom-up approaches to thesaurus construction. Additionally, we will cover best practices in thesaurus management in order to ensure fully functional and descriptive vocabularies.

Leveraging Your Semantic Enrichment Investment
What can you do with your taxonomy now that you have one? In this session we will solicit your plans, ideas, and the hopes you have for your taxonomies. We will not be evaluating or passing judgment on these ideas, but looking for ideas to share to better leverage your investment. How far can you push semantic enrichment? How many ways can they be used? Where can they be used? What processes and tools are needed? Our goal in this session is to gain a better understanding of your options for extending the value of your investment beyond your initial goal of building a world-class thesaurus.
