Stephen Arnold Discusses the Human Element
December 13, 2011 - In his Beyond Search blog yesterday, Stephen Arnold of ArnoldIT offered his insights on the subject of human involvement in taxonomy and indexing.
The blog entry, entitled "Taxonomy: More Marketing Craziness in Play?" identifies several companies that support the total automation of taxonomies. It also cites Access Innovations as an advocate of the human element in taxonomic indexing.
All indexing, Arnold says, is always subject to linguistic "drift." Human involvement, however, allows for the correction of drift that the software is "too stupid" to see.
